EIU Canback is a high growth management consulting firm leveraging predictive analytics with an expertise in emerging markets, operated independently under the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group. While our consulting practices include strategy, M&A due diligence, growth, and corporate finance, we also offer analytic services through the Canback Global Income Distribution Database (C-GIDD).

C-GIDD is the world’s most comprehensive and detailed database for GDP and income distribution data at the city level, used for virtually all of our consulting projects, as well as available for individual and corporate clients as a subscription service. C-GIDD covers 213 countries divided into 697 provinces and 997 cities, and includes historical data and projections 2001 - 2027 and national-level data 1970 - 2037. The database provides a breakdown by socioeconomic level and uses hundreds of sources including global bodies like the UN and IMF, national statistics agencies, and sub-national statistic agencies within larger countries.

C-GIDD also powers the EIU’s Market Explorer, an online tool for forecasting target markets across countries and cities. What makes C-GIDD unique compared to other services is a) truly global coverage of all countries and qualified cities with no missing data, b) harmonized definitions that make all data points easily comparable, c) unique income distribution algorithm applied to city level.

Due to the immense success of this initiative, we are now hiring a dedicated C-GIDD specialist to manage and maintain C-GIDD on full-time basis and further develop the supporting methodology. Keeping C-GIDD aligned with rolling updates from various global and local sources will be the main and ongoing task together with continuous efforts to expand the database and harmonize with EIU data. The Economic Analyst will be based at our Boston office, working closely with the current C-GIDD team to learn and understand the econometric methods underlying C-GIDD, as well as acquire understanding of the numerous data sources and learn how work with statistics, data modelling, and global macroeconomics. Eventually the Economic Analyst will assume most of the responsibilities related to maintaining C-GIDD, developing new extensions and advising C-GIDD customers.

If you have an affinity for analytics, love handling large datasets and are interested in deepening your global macroeconomics expertise, please submit your resume and cover letter.

In the role you would be expected to:

  • Collect, clean, and analyze macroeconomic data from hundreds of sources around the world, as well as harmonize with C-GIDD definitions so that it can be integrated into the main dataset.
