The EIU consumer practice provides data-driven analytical solutions for consumer-facing industries, helping them to enter new markets and be more successful in current markets.

Currently we are seeking a Director for our global consumer practice. Based in London, this role will report to the EIU's chief commercial officer, and will also work closely with a range of other senior stakeholders. In this role you will manage a global team including the business development and delivery functions based in EIU offices around the world. The key performance metric for this position is to drive top line business growth as well as ensuring that client engagements are delivered at the high level of quality expected within The Economist Group.

This is a hands on commercial role, with the successful hire expected to directly support the business development teams in securing new projects from existing and new clients.

The ideal candidate will have direct experience of the commercial aspects of the consulting project life-cycle, including business development and ongoing client relationship management. They would also have a good understanding of the manner in which such engagements are delivered.

 

 

Accountabilities

In the role you would be expected to:

  • Be accountable for the overall management, development, operation and high standards of a thriving, consumer research consulting business
  • Work with key stakeholders to develop and implement a business plan for the practice
  • Intelligently manage the most senior client relationships to develop integrated/on-going advisory engagements and increase the likelihood of repeat business
  • Work closely with colleagues to develop new methodologies and initiatives, and create impactful collateral that presents the consumer practice value proposition effectively
  • Conduct business development activities, including presenting to potential new clients, scoping client requirements accurately, and developing high-impact proposals and pitches
  • Ensure that the practice is properly resourced and organised and led to deliver projects smoothly to the appropriate quality standard
  • Manage the overall practice achieving business goals including profitability and client satisfaction

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must have:
  • An ability and desire to be a strategic thinker and operate comfortably in a complex business environment
  • Strong research/consulting team management experience
  • Experience in managing, engaging and motivating a globally dispersed commercial team
  • The drive and ability to continuously balance commercial considerations with high standards of editorial integrity and analytical capability
  • Sustained experience of developing, selling and delivering strategic advisory/consulting projects to senior executives within corporations, governments and non-profits
  • Proven business development and revenue generation success; sector specialisation (i.e. consumer goods, retail, industrial) preferred; experience with cold/greenfield client cultivation strongly preferred
