CQ Roll Call is seeking an energetic and skilled reporter to cover immigration and homeland security. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and offer a deep knowledge of congressional politics, procedure, budget and policy. Accuracy and non-partisanship are foundational. Strong collaboration is a must, as the candidate would work daily with CQ Roll Call’s team of reporters and editors to produce excellent content for our newsletter, website, mobile app and other products, including analysis for a legal audience. The preferred candidate will be able to write daily regulatory and legislative news relating to immigration law, as well as breaking news as needed on homeland security and emergency management topics as they develop in Congress.  The candidate should show the energy and determination to provide accurate, clear, fast and smart news on multiple platforms. Applicants should have at least two yearsexperience at a major news organization, a commitment to strong, watchdog coverage of policy making in Washington, and the ability to convey sometimes complicated information in a clear and lively manner.

 

 

Accountabilities

In the role you would be expected to:

 

  • Build a network of sources on and off Capitol Hill and share them with colleagues
  • Break news and quickly update moving stories, following developments sometimes for long hours
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadline
  • Write at least two stories a day for a legal and regulatory audience, as well as breaking news stories and longer-deadline, deeper trend and personality stories.
  • Write clearly and concisely on deadlines, and meet those deadlines with the highest standards of accuracy
  • Use established best practices to ensure stories meet SEO minimum standards
  • Use established best practices to share their stories and those of colleagues through social media
  • Work with the graphics team on data visualization to go with stories or tell the story through interactives
  • Coordinate with editors and the photo team so that stories are illustrated
  • Assist with minor production duties
  • Work nights and weekends when the beat requires it

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:  

 

  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in journalism, English, political or government studies, or other relevant disciplines
  • Two years’ experience reporting experience in Washington and Capitol Hill
  • Strong knowledge of Congress, immigration and homeland security policies
  • Source development
  • Strong knowledge of members of Congress
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings as needed
