    CQ Roll Call seeks a staff writer with expertise in banking and financial services to write about legislation, hearings, lobbying and politics related to the industry.

     

     

     

    Accountabilities

    In the role you would be expected to:

     

    • Cover hearings, bill markups, floor action and other events dealing with subjects of interest to financial services businesses, an industry with deep pockets to advance its interests in Congress and throughout the federal government
    • Develop stories and sources off Capitol Hill related to the industry, including lobbying and campaigning by banks and financial services firms
    • Cover legislation for our core online product, and write for CQ magazine, contribute to Roll Call, record podcasts, appear as an expert at events and outside media, and participate in the newsroom's growth initiatives

     

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    To succeed in the role you must have:  

    • Strong writing and reporting skills; sources in the industry, K Street and regulatory agencies; and experience in breaking stories
    • The ability to write clearly and quickly 
    • The ability to track and understand legislation, including appropriations bills that allocate funding to the Treasury Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and other relevant agencies. The applicant must generate story ideas and analysis for a sophisticated audience that includes government, associations and trade groups, and corporations
    • Attention to detail, knowledge of the financial services industry, and the ability to create and interpret data for trend stories are a must
    • 5+ years of experience covering Congress or the banking industry and demonstrate an ability to mine legislation, lobbying and campaign spending reports, and regulatory filings for incisive stories that connect the dots
    • The ability to write spot news as well as features and longer-form data-driven stories, amplify work on social media, and demonstrate an ability to raise the newsroom’s profile and reach through growth initiatives.
