    EIU Public policy


    The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Public Policy Consulting team helps clients create impact on the policy issues that matter most, using evidence-based research and economic methods.


    We work collaboratively with our clients to help them better understand the economic, social and environmental impacts of policy and regulation, behavior change, and other scenarios.

    Our work typically involves:

    • Economic impact analysis
    • Cost-benefit analysis
    • Econometrics and other data analytics
    • Scenario analysis
    • Qualitative analysis

    As an Economist in the Public Policy Consulting team, you will work closely with experienced individuals from both inside The Economist Intelligence Unit, and our clients, to deliver impactful, evidence-based programs that support client goals in policy advocacy, thought leadership, and internal decision-making.


    Please note, as a US government contractor we require that candidates interested in this role must be US citizens and or have the ability to pass US government security clearance requirements.


    How you will contribute:

    • Conceptualise client projects and develop methodologies and research techniques appropriate to the tasks at hand;
    • Generating analysis and insight: executing rigorous and insightful analysis to build an evidence base to support advocacy, thought leadership, and decision-making;
    • Directly manage individual research projects, leading all aspects of project delivery, including acting as the key client contact on engagements
    • Applying economic thinking and analysis: deploying a range of economic tools, skills and frameworks that can be brought to bear on new client problems, and shared as best practice within the team;
    • Teamwork: working with senior and junior team members in order to ensure successful project delivery;
    • Relationship management: working with clients and third parties (e.g. academics) to develop strong professional relationships;
    • Continuous Learning: proactively developing your own skills, seeking feedback, building knowledge, and sharing your insight with colleagues;
    • Supporting the growth of the Public Policy Consulting team and contributing positively to business development by working closely with clients to develop repeat and renewal projects, and by working with the sales team and consultant colleagues on new business opportunities

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    The ideal skills for this role are:

    • 5+ years’ experience in applied economics, in a consultancy environment, government department or commercial organization
    • An undergraduate degree in economics or a related discipline as well as a postgraduate qualification in economics, econometrics, statistics or a related discipline
    • An interest in addressing complex policy problems using evidence and analysis, with a track record of successful delivery in a project environment
    • A track record in delivering high quality, robust project deliverables
    • Self-starter comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with experience managing teams
    • Demonstrable project management and client-facing experience business development experience
    • Experience in undertaking market analyses for strategy decision-making
    • Familiarity and experience using analytical software including SPSS, R, SAS, E-views and Stata, as well as Excel
