    We are recruiting a Senior Data Developer to join our rapidly growing Digital team in Gurgaon. As we look to accelerate our drive towards becoming a digitally enabled business, we are actively changing our landscape, from supporting desktop data tools, Excel analysis and visualisation pipelines to Cloud scale big data analysis on AWS.

    The bulk of the developer’s work would be in building, managing and optimising data pipelines and then moving these data pipelines effectively into production for key data consumers such as our economists, analysts and data scientists.

    Data developer also need to guarantee compliance with data governance and data security requirements while creating, improving and operationalising these integrated and reusable data pipelines. This would enable faster data access, integrated data reuse and vastly improved time-to-solution for EIU data and analysis initiatives.

    This role will be part of our Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York. Some flexibility will be required to work with some crossover with London and New York.


    How you will contribute:


    Build data pipelines: Architecting, creating and maintaining data pipelines

    • Develop Data Managements and Workflow extensions in MS Excel applications (Example: Visual Studio tools for Office)
    • Develop database features in MS Access and MS SQL Server (data modelling, T-SQL, and SSIS) for managing business data and reporting
    • Work with the Website development team to deliver data and content to the customers in interactive and innovative ways
    • Define Application architecture and explore & implement new technologies


    Drive Automation through effective metadata management: The use of innovative and modern tools, techniques and architectures to partially or completely automate the most-common, repeatable and tedious data preparation and integration tasks in order to minimize manual and error-prone processes and improve productivity.


    Support and Transition: Support and optimise our current desktop data tool set and Excel analysis pipeline to a transformative Cloud scale Big Data Architecture environment.

    • Maintain and upgrade EIU’s Econometric forecasting system in MS Excel and MS Office Add-Ins
    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with the daily publishing of EIU data; manage data flow systems, databases and integration with the EIU content management system and websites
    • Monitor and manage EIU’s scheduled data feeds; ensure on-time delivery to EIU data partners via FTP, SFTP, and Data APIs

    Collaborate across departments: Work in close relationship with data science teams and with business (economists/data) analysts in refining their data requirements for various initiatives and data consumption requirements.

    • Working in Agile Scrum and Kanban process where team communication and flexibility are highly valued
    • Review and estimate business requirements and user stories
    • Break down user stories into development tasks
    • Participate in design sessions and provide technical solutions

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    The ideal skills for this role are:


    • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel, VBA programming
    • Strong ability to design, build and manage data pipelines for data structures encompassing data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata and workload management.
    • Enterprise application development experience
      • Microsoft visual studio
      • Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
      • Source Code Control – SVN, Git
    • 5+ years development experience with MS Excel with integration of 
      • C#.NET
      • MS Access
      • MS SQL Server
    • Project experience in a professional work setting:
      • 5+ years working in an organisation
      • 2+ years as the technical expert within a cross functional team made up of data scientists, researchers and analysts
    • Additional technical skills is a plus
      • Experience with handling time series and advance forms of data (Example: satellite data)
      • Understanding of popular open-source and commercial data science platforms such as Python and R is a strong plus but not required/compulsory.
      • Experience working with popular data discovery, and BI software tools like Tableau, Qlikview and PowerBI
      • Windows/ .Net Services
      • REST API
    • Extreme proficiency in setting up, optimizing, testing, and debugging applications to ensure operation, quality and conformance to creative and engineering specifications.
    • Any degree with strong quantitative elements (IT, mathematics, statistics, engineering etc.) or equivalent experience
    • The ideal candidate will have a combination of IT skills, and economics knowledge with a technical or computer science degree
