We are developing a world class product management organisation and have an exciting opportunity for an exceptional individual to join our product leadership team to drive digital product activities in the core Economist consumer publishing business. 


Currently we are seeking a Head of Product who:


  • Reports to the Chief Product Officer (based in London)
  • Closely liaisons with the President / MD of The Economist (based in the USA)
  • Working closely with senior functional stakeholders across a matrix structure
  • Specifics of this role’s direct reports and organisation are currently being defined



How you will contribute:


  • You will work closely with our newly appointed Chief Product Officer to rapidly evolve our product management practice and with the President / MD of The Economist to define the overall digital strategy, objectives and deliverables for your product teams
  • You will be based in either London or New York, and both domestic and international travel will be required
  • You will play a pivotal role by leading collaboration across a matrix organisation of multiple functional and geographical stakeholders, owning the product development life-cycle for the core Economist digital consumer products including customer and product discovery, and Agile development methodologies.
  • You will have direct management responsibility for product managers and/or managers of product managers, including responsibility for team recruitment and development
  • You will also be a major contributor to the practice of product management - ensuring that we are constantly focused on evolving and strengthening our methods, skills and capabilities


Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role include:


  • An extensive and storied career (perhaps 15 years plus) of launching and evolving world-class products at high growth companies, leading high performing cross-functional teams in the consumer digital product space
  • Deep knowledge of consumer subscription, advertising and marketing services revenue models - particularly creating customer value through commercial bundles and managing customer churn
  • Leadership of Agile and hybrid delivery teams – demonstrating a track record of multiple successes in launching and continually improving digital consumer products   
  • Experience at developing high performing teams, building collaborative strategy and solving problems when they arise
  • Solid experience of CX processes and benefits, user research and a strong understanding of mobile-first and responsive design

Must have skills and capabilities:

  • Data-driven and hypothesis-led with the ability to balance user research and business objectives
  • Results oriented. You can cut to the core of a problem, identify what needs to be done and when, and work with the teams to get solutions shipped
  • Great at prioritising & making decisions – not afraid to say no
  • Ability to motivate and drive cross-functional teams without formal authority
  • Top notch collaboration and communication skills, both getting things started and when they run into difficulties
  • Passion for building the best experience for our users, and understand how to measure success
  • Rapid development of prototypes, informed by research and testing 
  • Skilled at communicating to stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge
  • A proven ability to climb steep learning curves, fast
