The quantiative economics unit of the EIU is looking for a data analyst (on contract) to manage its income distribution database and update/redevelop the methodology. 


This is a fixed term contract for six months.


How will you contribute?

  • Review the current methodology and data sources for the income distribution model(s) - conduct relevant literature review(s)
  • Manage scheduled updates of the models and the database in a timely manner, on an end-to-end basis
  • Audit the methodology to identify reduntant sections and weak points
  • Redevelop the models in-line with latest developments in the field of income distribution/in-equality modelling
  • Deliver be-spoke data projects, based on the quantitative elements of the same methodology
    • Support busineness development teams in scoping such be-spoke opportunities
  • Support the product & data engineering team with product development initiatives with the data
  • Support customer service teams with queries from customers about the database (data quality, sources, methology etc)

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Relevant degree in the field of economics/mathematics/statistics/social science or similar
  • Prior experience in working with income distribution/income inequality models; familiarity with concepts like Lorenz curve, Gini coefficient
  • Prior knowledge/experience with statistical concepts like cumulative distribution, curve smoothing;  knowledge about Lambert's W function, Newton-Raphson algorithm for root etc will be an added advantage
  • Familiarity with global economic, demographic and social sector statistics databases like IMF WEO, World Bank WDI, UNU-WIDER etc
  • Advanced MS Excel skills – experience with formula auditing, manipulating and cleaning large data sets in excel, knowledge of advanced functions like VLookup/HLookup, Match, Offset, Index, Indirect, Nested If-Then-Else and similar
    • Proficiency in Excel VBA and experience in building VBA macros functions is desirable
  • Attention to details and ability to ensure consistent high-quality products and services
  • Strong communication skills
