Introduction

The Economist Group logo

The Mobile Engineering Manager will report directly to the Head of Engineering for The Economist, be based out of our Birmingham engineering hub and is responsible for driving architectural design, coding best practice and optimising our mobile engineering delivery for our new Economist flagship mobile app.

The appointee will join the team at a time of significant development and growth and the need for technology excellence and digital customer experience becomes paramount in our ability to deliver this.

We are therefore looking for an experienced Mobile Engineering Manager to lead our mobile engineering teams. Our flagship app is built with React Native and we are looking for someone with experience in iOS and Android, running teams in a cross-platform environment.

An important priority for this role is to build our in-house mobile engineering capability. We have a desire to move from a majority outsourced engineering team to an in-house team. We have 2 in-house engineers so far and are looking to add up to 4 more.

This is the time to be joining a profitable, responsible business with a brand and culture that you can be proud of and with every opportunity to deliver success for the Group and yourself. You will have the opportunity to set the technical direction and to make your mark on a global brand's flagship product and we’re looking for someone who has not only done this before but is excited to join us and do it again.

Location

This role is available in our central Birmingham office, just a 5 min walk from New Street Station and 1 min walk from Snow Hill Station.

We offer flexible working and have systems in place to ensure working remotely when the need arises. However during the current Covid-19 situation, we are all remote, the intention is that when we are ready we will move back to spending more time in the office than not.

Accountabilities

How you will contribute:

  • Reporting to the Head of Software Engineering, you will be a part of the product engineering leadership team establishing and advocating engineering best practices across the organisation
  • Work with our designers and product owners in our product organisation to create a seamless user experience
  • Work with product owners and architects to provide technical leadership within the team
  • Help prioritise the technical roadmap, we spend 25% of engineering time on technical debt and improvements
  • Work in a React Native environment, but help choose the correct balance between Native & Cross-platform experiences
  • Support senior engineering management and the recruiting team to lead the hiring, onboarding and retention of diverse and talented software engineers
  • Support and develop software engineers through regular 1:2:1’s, mentoring and providing feedback

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for the role are:

  • Extensive technical background in mobile app development in a native and cross-platform environment.
  • You have experience managing the performance and development of high-performing software engineers at all career levels
  • You are a passionate advocate for modern mobile engineering best practices
  • Understanding of the importance of using metrics to influence product and technical decisions
  • Experience working in an agile environment
  • Technical project management skills.
  • Care for the problems our customers are facing, and how the solutions we produce affect the interaction with our product
  • Experience in automation quality tooling, CI/CD and unit testing

We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply. The Economist was founded in 1843 to make the world a better place through better education, open borders, open markets and diversity; our software is one way that we do that.
