We’re embedding alternate data sources such as GPS and satellite data into our forecasting, products will increasingly be tailored to individual clients, providing some of the most innovative data in the market. A highly collaborative team of Product Managers, Customer Experience and Product Engineering is being created with a focus on creating business and customer value. 


The Economist Intelligence Unit ( are rethinking their products, and how they engineer and design from a client perspective. With a growing outside in approach meeting user needs is foremost in our minds. As a one of our most experienced DevSecOps engineers you will improve how we continuously deliver our applications ensuring the security, integrity and stability and continuity of our systems to support all of our clients.

Team Structure

  • You’ll manage a team of three engineers, including one contractor
  • You’ll report to our Head of DevSecOps
  • You’ll work closely with our Cloud and Big Data Architect
  • You’ll help our Head of Engineering in getting things to work, while making sure they’re stable and shipped
  • You’ll have the help of a service manager who will help you ensure we have insightful blame free postmortems
  • You’ll plug into the larger DevSecOps communities of practice and wider engineering teams at The Economist Group

Can you:

  • Manage end-to-end availability and performance of mission critical services and build automation to prevent problem recurrence
  • Design, write and deliver software to improve the availability, durability, latency of services across The Economist Intelligence Unit
  • Manage on-call rotations across The US, Europe and India. We have engineers based in New York, London, Birmingham and Gurgaon
  • Coach, mentor and support your direct reports
  • Educate and train engineering colleagues on DevSecOps best practices
  • Work closely with our product teams to reduce the friction of deployments to production
  • Own and manage the Cloud infrastructure setup and assist on the innovation roadmap
  • Engage with some stakeholder, supplier and partner management
  • Engage in FinOps and CO2 ops to ensure we’re lean and good for the planet


Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills and experience for this role include:

  • Team centric - you’ll have super people skills, and apply these across your work
  • Experience as a software engineer would help, but isn’t essential. We use Javascript, Python and C# and Git for VCS
  • Have built new systems using modern techniques, and migrated legacy applications to more modern architectures
  • Using AWS and knowing about EC2, RDS, Lambda, CDK, ECS, EKS and S3
  • *nix systems admin

To succeed in this role it would be an advantage if you possess:

  • A deep love for Containers and Serverless
  • A desire to do things properly while also fixing and refactoring legacy software
  • Experience with Windows Server, IIS, MS SQL Server and modern .NET applications
  • Scripting experience in Bash or Powershell
  • A fondness for deep-dives into code, networking, operating systems and storage
  • A history of working with, managing and mentoring a team of enthusiastic and experienced engineers on large scale projects
  • An aptitude for problem solving 
  • Experience in analysing global scale distributed systems
  • A keenness to keep on learning and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge
  • Effective communication skills
