Currently we are seeking a Vice President Finance (VP) to lead the Finance function for Client Solutions and Events reporting to the CFO of The Economist Group as well as the President of Client Solutions and the Managing Director, Events.


As a member of the senior management teams for Client Solutions and Events, the VP will have responsibility for the financial performance of the Client Solutions and Events businesses on a global basis, including its business units and functional areas, providing management information including monthly KPI’s and analysis to the business. The VP will lead the forecasting and budgeting processes and work closely with other Economist Group finance leaders to prepare monthly reports for inclusion in management reports.


Using your experience and commercial acumen you will challenge business assumptions in forecasting & planning and interpret financial analysis to enable our stakeholders to make key decisions and achieve targets and drive performance. This could involve pre and post analysis of business initiatives as well as leading the long range and annual financial planning process.


The ideal candidate will be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; will be a creative, commercially focused and analytical problem solver. They will be able to communicate complex financial information clearly to a non-financial audience. This is a unique opportunity to deliver significant value by developing and enhancing our planning capabilities. This role will offer high level global exposure and can be located either in the UK or US.


How you will contribute: 

  • Provide strategic financial and commercial thinking to the Financial Planning & Analysis function with responsibility for all planning processes, including the annual plan, monthly forecasts, and long-range plans
  • Work with the wider senior management team in forward planning, budgeting, financial reporting
  • Provide actionable insights and analyses which enable the business to drive the right decisions.
  • Provide strategic financial analysis and modelling to influence the forward-looking vision of the business, but also help grow the business through advanced financial modeling and development of business cases for strategic growth opportunities.
  • Cost management in aligning resources to contribution goals and achievement of contribution goals
  • Provide the financial reporting, analysis and metrics to ensure the business teams are managing the business and hitting their financial and operational targets
  • Provide financial models and analysis which will guide the organization to make decisions that drive the best ROI for the company
  • Support commercial decision making providing support to decisions about pricing, profitability and commercial terms (such as credit terms).


Specific objectives: 

  • Manage a team of 8 including 4 finance business partners, 2 analysts and 2 business accountants
  • Develop relationships with stakeholders both within finance and within the commercial business to anticipate and meet their needs
  • Provide leadership, coaching, review, mentoring, performance management and development to the team
  • Provide financial and commercial insight into the performance of the business
  • Provide oversight of pricing and margin performance for products and services and a view towards new products and business lines
  • Provide insight into the performance of competitors (where accessible)
  • Lead the financial planning and reporting with accountability for financial standards and compliance
  • Oversee the sales commission schemes and effectiveness
  • Develop and maintain meaningful KPIs
  • Provide financial input into key contractual negotiations
  • Present results, financial plans, risks and opportunities to the MC and group management team

Work with the Director of Group Finance to:

    • Ensure the integrity and quality of financial results for the areas directly managed
    • Ensure that all key compliance requirements are met including internal and external audits, accounting policies, and risk reviews 
    • Lead the evaluation and execution of process, system and reporting improvements

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are: 

  • 15+ years of experience including time leading a finance function
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance an MBA or accountancy qualification is a plus
  • Strong financial planning and modeling skills and have strong planning and control discipline 
  • Private and Public company experience is preferred
  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to build high performance teams that can operate in a high growth environment
  • Experience managing the business planning process across a company and ability to support new business models
  • Strong track record of business partnering with C-suite/senior level executives
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and proven experience in cultivating collaborative working relationships with teams across an organization
  • A proven ability to think strategically and plan effectively; be detailed, results oriented, while managing multiple tasks against deadlines
  • Operates at a senior management level and can influence strong and talented peers
  • Clear thinker and communicator; confidence in presenting ideas and financial results
