The Economist is seeking an experienced insight professional to join our Insight & Data Science Team as a Senior Insight Analyst. Our Insight & Data Science Team is a central source of data skills working across all facets of the business. As part of this team you will be working to understand customer behaviour on our website


Our website is a key part of our digital ecosystem. It’s crucial to our business that both subscribers and new readers have the best possible experience when they visit. In this role you will work closely with the product managers and become part of the team behind, making sure insight and data are at the heart of the product development process. You will become an expert in the data from our analytics and other systems, acting as the point of contact for questions about what is happening on our website. Alongside smaller pieces of work you will take on insight projects aimed at identifying opportunities to improve our customer experience and helping to shape the product roadmap. You will also help measure the impact of changes to the product through analysis and A/B testing.


Demand for The Economist’s trusted high-quality content is at an all time high and as a result our team is expanding. As part of the Insight & Data Science team you will be able to share expertise with a range of data scientists and analysts who work on data relating to our digital products, editorial and customer retention activities. Our unified data lake will also create opportunities to work on raw datasets in SQL to understand complex journeys on and how they fit into the broader customer experience across our physical and digital channels.


We are primarily seeking a candidate with prior experience performing data analysis and a strong aptitude for generating insight from large datasets, as well as some prior experience of analytics data. Experience analysing raw datasets in SQL is advantageous, but candidates with relevant experience but needing to improve their technical skills by working as part of a diverse team are welcomed.

How you will contribute:


  • Build relationships with the team to understand their needs
  • Ensure we are tracking the right data in our analytics systems
  • Support regular reporting of performance of
  • Participate in the product roadmap process, identifying and sizing opportunities in data
  • Proactively identify insights that can improve customer experience
  • Measure the impact of changes the product team make, including supporting A/B tests

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills and attributes for this role include:

  • Ability to examine data critically to extract meaningful insights
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • Experience producing insight from large datasets
  • Experience working with data from analytics systems
  • The following would also be advantageous but not requireds:
  1. Experience using SQL for data analysis
  2. Experience working in a digital subscription or online retail business
