We are recruiting for a Head of Macroeconomics. This role is one of the most senior intellectual and analytical roles in the EIU, ensuring that our forecasts are the best available for decision-makers. You will manage a small team of senior analysts who ensure global consistency of the work of our wider team, and also manage our Economics and Data Unit.


You would be expected to have influence over a much larger team of analysts, while also being a leading communicator of our forecast to clients and the wider public. You would also be able to drive innovation and quality in our quantitative methods covering macroeconomic forecasting, risk measurement, policy assessment and emerging new techniques. 


This opportunity can be located in NY, Washington DC or London


How you will contribute:


  • Directly manage a small team of senior analysts and, through them, a larger team of quantitative analysts; indirectly mentor and influence a wider team of economic, political and business analysts
  • Directly and through your team drive incorporation of key global trends and narratives into our forecasts, working effectively through a matrix structure
  • Proactively implement improvements in our forecasting techniques and methods, both incremental and systematic
  • Write articles on key global and economic themes for our clients and ensure generation of these throughout your team 
  • Directly, and indirectly through your team, implement a program of continuous learning and development for analysts
  • Build the external profile of the EIU, including through building our business of paid speaking engagements
  • Work with analysts in other teams to test conclusions and ensure consistency
  • Be an internal and external thought leader for our forecasts and analysis, ensuring our content is relevant, insightful and actionable
  • Brief clients, present at conferences, and do media interviews
  • Ensure adherence to Economist editorial guidelines, including independence, objectivity and quality

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:


  • Deep knowledge of modeling, statistics and econometrics; ideally including familiarity with the potential role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques in economic forecasting
  • Strong credibility on global macroeconomics, through some combination of significant work experience and postgraduate qualifications (PhD desirable)
  • Be a dynamic and experienced presenter, ideally with an existing public profile and media experience
  • Comfortable using an influencing management style and can achieve outcomes without direct line management authority
  • Highly developed skills in managing an intellectually-driven team 
  • Fluency in English, exceptional writing skills.
