Under our newly appointed Chief Data Officer we are creating a center of excellence spanning research, analytics and data science partnering with the whole group, including our core subscription business, our Economist Intelligence Unit, Client Solutions and Events business. Our purpose is to better understand and affect the drivers of our business through data analytics and research, with a focus on our users, B2C customers and B2B clients. Reporting to the Head of Data Product Management, the Data Governance Manager will lead and manage all group-wide data governance activities and be responsible for improving and maintaining the integrity of data assets. The role focuses on managing and ensuring adherence to an enterprise data governance framework of data policies, standards and practices, in order to achieve, monitor and maintain levels of data integrity which foster trust in the data and ensure that data assets continually fulfil business needs and create business benefit.

As the Data Governance Manager, you will serve as a point of escalation for data quality issues and work closely with business leadership to improve the quality and value of core data assets, respond to regulatory requirements as well as support the strategic requirements of the Data & Insights team.


How you will contribute?

  • Curate the organisation’s data governance knowledge and information assets, including the data catalogue, data glossary and documented data standards.
  • Facilitate the ongoing development, implementation and business adoption of data quality standards.
  • Ensure that data quality issues are logged, tracked and remedied in a timely and effective manner.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Data & Insights team and Data Privacy to ensure that data initiatives comply with data protection laws.
  • Develop a data governance strategy and roadmap and leading its implementation.
  • Report on the integrity of the organisation's data assets.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure acceptance and sponsorship for data governance policy.
  • Oversee the use of tools and technologies involved in data governance procedures, to ensure their ongoing performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintain a data governance organisation structure, which is effective in upholding data governance policy and performing data governance processes.
  • Manage the performance and effectiveness of people in other data governance roles such as Data Quality Analysts and Data Custodians.
  • Define data performance and quality metrics and ensuring compliance with data related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Extensive experience of data governance experience in a related industry.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Information Technology, or an accredited qualification is a plus.
  • Proven background in a management role, with change or transformation leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data integrity.
  • Effective consulting skills, with change management concepts and strategies, including communication, culture change and performance measurement system design.
  • Knowledge and experience of data governance tools and technology solutions.
  • Deep subject matter expertise and the ability to shape and influence the way things are done.
  • Ability to self-direct and take on broad projects from beginning to end.
  • Knowledge of data security and privacy regulations and practices.
  • Ability to keep up with technology advancements.
