The Economist Events, the award-winning events department of The Economist Group, produces 70+ events a year and is seeking a Programme Editor to join the Custom Events team on a fixed-term contract until March 2022. Our Custom Events team works in collaboration with clients to develop events that feature The Economist’s editorial and independent content whilst positioning them as thought leaders in their field. The Programme Editor works closely with the Head of Programmes, Asia to ensure that we fulfil our promise to the client whilst maintaining our exacting standards for editorial quality and integrity.


The successful candidate will take responsibility for a number of events of various sizes and formats. Outstanding and sensitive communication and negotiation skills are essential along with the ability to carefully balance our strict editorial guidelines with our clients' commercial objectives. The successful applicant should have both extensive experience in working with demanding clients, as well as a deep understanding and respect for the editorial integrity of our brand.


How you will contribute:

  • Personally deliver a number of event programmes, including programme development, speaker and moderator recruitment and some supervision of programme assistants
  • Work in collaboration with the business development team to engage commercial supporters of the events
  • Lead some select strategic proposals and pitches
  • Support the project management team in executing the event strategy and play a key supporting role for others; contribute ideas and join brainstorms
  • Build and maintain key relationships across the group (including commercial and editorial), experimenting with and executing new ways of working together

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • 5+ years experience in event programme development and high-level speaker recruitment
  • Strong commercial acumen, experience in dealing with senior-level clients.
  • Experience in Asia
  • Strategic and tactical thinking, outstanding project management and organisational skills
  • A clear understanding of The Economistbrand and editorial values
