As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (The EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over 200 countries.

 

The Research Analyst will play a key role in supporting the research and analysis of The EIU’s Global Forecasting team. He/she will work closely on topics related to international/comparative politics, economics and policy. About 40% of the job involves research co-ordination/management; the rest is pure editing, research, analysis and writing.

 

We are looking for an intellectually curious and exceptionally organised self-starter who is passionate about international affairs and will fit in with a talented group of analysts based across the world.

 

The Research Analyst will report to The EIU’s Lead for Commerce and Regulation, who is based in Washington DC. He/she will also collaborate with The EIU’s Chief Economist.

Accountabilities

How you will contribute:

  • Work with a network of international correspondents to produce country-specific reports evaluating the business operating climate in 56 major economies worldwide. Topics include international trade, foreign direct investment, competition policy, labour regulations and tax policy, among others.
  • Draft and support the production of The EIU Chief Economist’s daily client newsletter, featuring The EIU’s most recent research and analysis.
  • Support the management and curation of The EIU’s ViewsWire service, an online client portal featuring The EIU’s latest global forecasts and analysis.
  • Play an active role in team discussions on regional themes and the development of The EIU’s global views.
  • Undertake other duties as needed related to The EIU's Global Forecasting team, including special research projects, product development, and client/prospect engagement.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role include:

  • Demonstrated experience researching and writing on international affairs, policy, and economics.
  • An ability to write incisively, while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Superior organisation and self-management abilities; this role requires juggling multiple tasks at once, and coordinating with colleagues in different time zones
  • A team player’s mentality.
  • Training in the social sciences. A master’s degree in International Relations, Economics, or related subject is preferred.
  • Relevant work experience of two to three years is a distinct advantage.
  • Exceptional written and spoken English.
  • A knack for placing clients first and maintaining a commercial focus.
  • Passion for international affairs and enthusiasm for working in a a fast-paced, cosmopolitan environment.
