We are recruiting a Platforms Support Engineer to support the users as well as the networks and systems that underpin the weekly creation and publishing of The Economist and related publications. The successful applicant will work in a team of 5 providing support Mon-Fri on a shift basis at our London offices. 


How will you contribute?


  • Ensure the Editorial, Graphics and Production departments are able to create and publish content for The Economist, 1843 and World Ahead.
  • Primarily a 2nd line role, with aspects of 1st & 3rd.  Supporting all teams & departments within our building (Adelphi) & Editorial Worldwide.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the systems used to create and distribute The Economist and it’s sister publications, and the touch points between these systems.
  • Support and maintain the publishing systems and work in conjunction with vendors / support partners, minimising business disruption.
  • Provide a high quality and efficient end user IT support service. 
  • Support the AWS hosting environment for the Editorial authoring platform (CUE).
  • Understand networking, firewalls and I.T security.
  • Monitor the systems pro-actively (health-checks) - physical/VMware/AWS - including networks management to mitigate any impact of failures to Editorial and Production teams.
  • Cost optimisation of services - efficient use of cloud based services, non-wastage of licenses, innovative use of current systems.
  • Work with other Economist Tech teams to implement standards for internal and external users and maintaining healthy working relationships.
  • Work alongside other Economist Tech teams to understand the bigger picture when it comes to content distribution and platform integrations.
  • Ensure best practices are adhered to with current and future systems.
  • Support and maintain the the software deployment tool and imaging software.
  • Ensure that the security and integrity of the Newspaper’s systems are provided, and the implementation of back-up and contingency plans and procedures.
  • Support the meeting room AV equipment.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:


  • A good understanding of both MacOS and Windows.
  • The ability to work shifts - includes two late nights every few weeks.  No night work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Innovative.  When faced with a new problem, researching and implementing a solution independently.
  • Capacity and willingness to perform duties with initiative and resourcefulness.
  • The ability to work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • The willingness and ability to learn new skill sets.
  • Flexibility, and be self-sufficient and able to evaluate and set priorities when working under pressure or unsupervised.

  • It would be advantageous to have experience in - Linux & AWS.
