This is an exciting time to join the Data & Insights group at The Economist Group. Under our newly appointed Chief Data Officer we are creating a center of excellence spanning research, analytics and data science partnering with the whole group, including our core subscription business - The Economist, our Economist Intelligence Unit (subscription service covering macroeconomic risk and forecast analysis) subscription business, and our Economist Impact business (consultancy, events, content distribution and advertising services for marketers at our corporate and non-profit B2B clients, with a focus on sustainability, technology and new globalization). Our purpose is to better understand and affect the drivers of our business through data analytics and research, with a focus on our users, B2C customers and B2B clients. We are value focused and outcome driven: we help drive growth and agility at every level, whether through informing strategic alignment and decisions, providing quick feedback loops to operators, creating machine learning models to be integrated into our products and marketing communications, or developing data propositions for our B2B clients.

We are looking for a Manager / Sr Manager, Audience Data Strategy and Insights for Economist Impact to be based in London, reporting to the Chief Data Officer and partnering with our Economist Impact businesses (Client Solutions and Events) to create valuable insights and data solutions for our B2B clients. In this role you will lead the development of strategic insights about our audiences, as well as shape a winning first-party data strategy that enables us to better profile audiences and offer a differentiated data proposition that plays on The Economist competitive advantages and creates a trust-based, ethical, value exchange with our users. You will collaborate with Client Solutions’ and Events’ team to develop a suite of data-rich products that will directly underpin our commercial growth. You will be the Data, Research and Insights’ group’s main partner for those businesses, directly responsible for insights and data strategy, and working closely with our research, data science and data products & platform teams to deliver the full value of Data for The Economist Impact. Depending on experience level this role will be positioned at a Manager or Sr Manager level.


How you will contribute?

  • Build trust-based productive partnerships with senior stakeholders of the Economist Impact business units (e.g. marketing, product, finance teams and general managers), delivering insights and shaping our data propositions, and representing Data capabilities across the board

  • Establish audience and data collection KPIs based on key drivers of the Economist Impact business to complement drivers of our subscription business

  • Collaborate with Client Solutions management to develop a suite of rich, differentiating data propositions including advertising targeting segments as well as other ways for our clients to reach, engage with and learn from our audiences

  • Develop the underlying data strategy covering key data sources required to create relevant data propositions, whether first / second or third party. The first-party data strategy will include: value exchange with users, permissioning, priority fields to be collected directly from users, or to be inferred using AI or other techniques. This work will be undertaken in collaboration with the Chief Data Officer as well as select other Data team members and stakeholders as we shape our group-level data policies and ethical guardrails

  • Guide the design and development of strategic insights, engaging visualizations and compelling storytelling to be used across clients ; those materials will serve as a
    common backbone for client communications handled directly and customized by Client Solutions teams

  • Serve as an SME regarding the development of select dashboards on the above, as well as on our reporting on business trends, inventory management, etc, in collaboration with our BI team and select Client Solutions teams

  • Help identify areas where data science can be applied to generate value for the business and collaborate with our Data Science team as needed

  • Contribute to shaping the data technology roadmap in collaboration with our data platform product manager in order to increasingly automate richness and availability of the appropriate audience data

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Extensive experience developing and delivering insights from analytics data as well as data-based commercial propositions in an agency, media owner or consultancy-type business

  • A quantitative degree with a significant data, statistics, economics or computer science component

  • Ability to analyze data across multiple sources

  • Ability to design and explain data insights to answer business questions and shed light on key strategic and operational issues

  • Experience extracting, cleaning, preparing and analyzing data in SQL or Python whilst managing a team skilled in these tools

  • Proven experience managing and developing a team of well-rounded analysts, with a good mix of technical skills, business understanding, storytelling and stakeholder management abilities

  • Experience blending insights from analytics and research into scalable productized solutions a plus

  • Experience developing data products to be commercialized a plus

  • Sufficient understanding of the Data and Adtech / Martech eco-system to interface with the appropriate technology and operations teams and help shape data platform roadmap requirements

  • Experience of building productive relationships with stakeholders, understanding their needs but also educating them on the value of data and guiding priority-setting

  • A track record of having created business impact through insights and data propositions

  • Familiarity with wide-ranging data, research and insights disciplines

  • Ability to mentor and manage a small team

  • A meticulous approach to all work, completed to high level of quality

  • The ability to work under time pressure while providing high quality output

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
