We are currently recruiting a Senior Contracts Manager to review, draft and negotiate client and supplier contracts for The Economist Group’s various media businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), US and the Americas while pragmatically managing material risks (brand/reputation, financial, and legal) and facilitating business in a manner consistent with the current Economist Group policies and processes.


Some of the businesses include: The Economist, 1843, Economist Films, Economist Events, TVC, Signal Noise, EuroFinance and The Economist Intelligence Unit.



How you will contribute:


  • Ensure efficiency and thoroughness in reviewing and negotiating contracts to ensure that:
    • Services provided / received are accurately and unambiguously reflected
    • Risks are pragmatically mitigated through the incorporation of relevant terms
    • Polices and processes are adhered to
    • Compromises are reached through pragmatic and informed advocacy or creative solutions 
    • All client contracts are reviewed timely (within 24 hours from receipt (when reasonably practicable)
  • Understand the products and services sold by the businesses supported and the way those products / services are positioned to clients during the sales process as well as developed during the implementation process.
  • Proactively work with manager, legal department and Sr. Legal Counsel to prepare updates to contract templates or develop new contract templates when required
  • Effectively negotiate contracts with commercial practicality and a focus on minimizing risk for The Economist Group while facilitating business
  • Seek to identify prudent solutions to issues and situations where The Economist Group’s terms and a client’s terms conflict / diverge, while sensibility minimizing risk
  • When appropriate, liaise with Manager and the relevant Department Head (e.g. Finance, Editorial, Legal, etc.) to secure applicable approvals / direction on risk assumption, etc.
  • Work closely with Contracts Analyst/Paralegal and Contracts counterparts globally, Sales, business heads, Finance and Legal Department staff, as well as all other commercial departments supported to:
    • Develop a reputation as a trusted and reliable resource for contract support
    • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the businesses / departments and the products and services sold by or produced by these businesses / departments
    • Maintain an awareness of relevant operating policies and processes (including discounting approval authorities, signatory authorities, rate cards, editorial guidelines, etc.)
    • Develop a thorough understanding of Salesforce (its functionality and reporting capabilities) and how it is used by the Sales teams
    • Raise ideas for improvements and implementation of efficiencies (with respect to the contracts processes, contract templates, etc.)
    • Provide relevant training / host information sessions for businesses and departments supported in relation to contract templates available and the processes associate with use of those templates (including induction training for new salespeople as it relates to the contract process and applicable templates available for use)
    • Communicate relevant policies and processes with simplicity and clarity
    • Proactively notify Business Operations counterparts and Finance of Group Sales or other matter that require their attention / awareness as it relates to contracts
    • Provide coverage for Contracts colleagues when they are on holiday or unavailable for an extended period (or if urgent matters arise)


Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:


  • A Law Degree or qualified solicitor/attorney.
  • Extensive experience reviewing, drafting, negotiating and overall management of commercial contracts
  • Thorough knowledge of common commercial contracts used in the: media, publishing and/or film industries or other relevant industries; commercial experience outside the law
  • Good Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills required; prior use of Salesforce is required (or other similar customer relationship management (CRM) system)
  • English fluency required (other EMEA languages would be helpful but are not required)
  • Excellent EQ skillset (emotional intelligence), time management and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work in a changing and agile environment and be flexible in working in an agile workforce model.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; adaptable; good at identifying material risks in contracts by leveraging practical commercial sense and sound legal skills; consensus builder that can collaboratively influence others; meticulous attention to detail; good communication skills – concise, persuasive, and diplomatic; self-motivated problem-solver; collaborative team player.
  • Efficiency, thoroughness, and commercial practicality by which contracts are reviewed and negotiated.
  • Ability to manage risks (brand, financial, and legal).

  • Ability to effectively and diplomatically communicate; ability to proactively address issues, present ideas, implement solutions and problem solve.
  • Overall comprehension of The Economist Group businesses and associated departments.

  • Ability to be a collaborative member of the Business Operations and Contracts Department and The Economist Group.
