What we’re looking for
The Economist Group is in the middle of a multi-year multi-platform transformation. The last
two years have seen us transform our Subscriber experience for both Print and Digital
customers and the immediate future is focused on tackling areas such as B2B Marketing &
Sales, HR and Finance. As the core capabilities for each area are released, we look to
continue enhancing our business and platform capabilities to better meet the needs of our
customers.
To support the business we are expanding our Subscriber platform capability and are looking
for a Business Analyst to join this team. The subscription platforms are at the core of our
business, they underpin our digital subscriptions and key business capabilities. While the
initial focus is in our subscriptions arena, in the longer term this role could work to support
platforms and business teams across the Economist.
The successful candidate will be working to support the end to end process of changes
across customer facing and business platforms, business teams, and product development.
They will be focused from discovery analysis and understanding to supporting delivery
within the team. Their investigations to validate and understand the incoming requests will
take them across the business to ensure a thorough understanding of the change needed
through process, technology or data.
They will be part of a team of three Business analysts in this area and close collaboration
across a vast remit will be essential. This role is part of the Business Analysis and Change
discipline at The Economist, the team actively collaborates with each other to learn, grow
and discover new skills to deliver effective change and value

Accountabilities

● Scope and plan the required analysis to support early investigation into the value and
purpose of potential changes or problems with a self starter and proactive approach.
● Use root cause analysis, impact mapping or other to understand and demonstrate
links and reasoning between a reported problem and the underlying issue.
● Actively chase down a problem, change the scope of analysis to discover the cause,
with the experience to focus and prioritise their approach
● Ability to present the value of a piece of work, whether through quantitative data or
qualitative reasoning, with an argument and impact measures to proceed or delay.
● Develops and maintains engaging and valuable relationships across the business
and is able to challenge constructively for the benefit of all
● Collaborate with Platform owners and Engineering to deliver technology that
supports our business through simplicity, efficiency and clear value.
● Produce high quality analysis that generates a consistent understanding or prompts
constructive discussion towards an approach across Business areas, Data, Product
and Engineering teams.
● Support and collaborate with the Engineering team through the delivery phase with
detailed and well structured requirements and clear acceptance criteria with
measures of success
● Support the backlog with appropriate analysis from the most appropriate focus and
at the level required to solve the problem faced or answer the question at hand
● Facilitate productive and engaging workshops at any and all stages of the process
with clear aims and outcomes.
● Drive for improvements to ways of working within the team that increases the
delivery of value and improvements in team culture.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

● Experience of providing effective and valuable analysis in a platform environment
(eg: Subscription Management, CRM, Billing platforms, B2B Sales & Marketing, HR,
Finance), understanding their capabilities and limitations as well as interactions and
relationships between internal and third party technologies.
● Knowledge and experience of working with a successful platform engineering team
and an understanding of the value they bring to the business.
● Proven methodologies and techniques for transforming analysis and investigation
into recommendations or problems across processes, systems, data and products.
● Experience of working as a BA in an agile delivery environment, with an ability to
break down larger initiatives into smaller capabilities that deliver incremental value
towards the strategic mission.
● Ability to recognise when analysis and investigations should go wider than initially
expected and the experience to focus and prioritise their approach.
● Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to constructively challenge
and play devil's advocate that results in trusted relationships.
● Excellent presentation and communication skills with suitable information at the best
level for the audience.
● A highly collaborative work style and the ability to successfully work in a team
environment driving collaborative behaviours and psychological safety.
● A desire to learn and grow in the the Business analysis discipline
