We are recruiting for a Global Director of Research and Economics. This role is one of the most senior intellectual and analytical roles in the EIU, ensuring that our forecasts are the best available for decision-makers. You will manage the Global Forecasting team and the Economics Unit, being responsible for developing the team and driving quality and innovation.


You would be expected also to have influence over the much larger team of analysts around the globe, while also being a leading communicator of our forecast to clients and the wider public. You would also be able to drive innovation and quality in our qualitative and quantitative analysis and methods, and be capable of personally delivering astute insights, but also creating the conditions to generate these in the teams you manage and beyond. 


This opportunity can be located in any of the EIU's major offices worldwide.


How you will contribute:


  • Directly manage the Global Forecasting and Economics Unit leaders and, through them, their teams; indirectly mentor and influence the wider team of economic, political and business analysts
  • Be a driving force behind the creation of 'the EIU view', pushing beyond consensus. Directly and through your team drive incorporation of key global trends and narratives into our forecasts, working effectively through a matrix structure
  • Ensure that the processes of the Global Forecasting team and Economics Unit are delivering the support, influence and outputs that are required by other teams in the EIU (including data ingestion, workbook and model maintenence, analytical context)
  • Proactively implement improvements in our forecasting techniques and methods, both incremental and systematic
  • Write articles on key global, geopolitical and economic themes for our clients and ensure generation of these throughout your team 
  • Directly, and indirectly through your team, implement a program of continuous learning and development for analysts
  • Build the external profile of the EIU, including through building our business of paid speaking engagements
  • Work with analysts in other teams to test conclusions and ensure consistency
  • Be an internal and external thought leader for our forecasts and analysis, ensuring our content is relevant, insightful and actionable
  • Brief clients, present at conferences, and do media interviews
  • Ensure adherence to Economist editorial guidelines, including independence, objectivity and quality

Experience, skills and professional attributes

The ideal skills for this role are:


  • Knowledge of modeling, statistics and econometrics
  • Track record of cutting-edge analytical thinking in geopolitics, business and politics
  • Leadership and management experience of teams overseeing complex processes
  • Strong credibility on global macroeconomics, through some combination of significant work experience and postgraduate qualifications 
  • Be a dynamic and experienced presenter, ideally with an existing public profile and media experience
  • Comfortable using an influencing management style and can achieve outcomes without direct line management authority
  • Highly developed skills in managing an intellectually-driven team 
  • Fluency in English, exceptional writing skills.
